3D acoustic/viscoacoustic time-domain FWI of OBC data from the Valhall field

Résumé

Performing 3D time-domain full-waveform inversion (FWI) poses a challenge in terms of computational resources required, especially when the volume of recorded data is large. We adopt a subsampling strategy, wherein only a fraction of the total data are used every iteration of FWI, to invert the hydrophone component of an ocean bottom cable (OBC) dataset acquired in the North Sea. Compared to the conventional method, in which all data are employed every iteration, a significant reduction in computational cost can be achieved without degrading the quality of the reconstructed model. We take advantage of the improved efficiency to run viscoacoustic FWI. Although the influence of attenuation is less significant for the frequencies in the data inverted here, it gives us some perspective for future work.
