The driving comfort perceived by the driver is as important for the commercial success of a vehide as its dynamic performances or its fuel efficiency. Unfortullately, though, this element is much more difficult to measure and to master that the last two. During the conception and the final fine tuning of a new car vast efforts are made to insure a correct level of the different comfort performances. This performances depend on most of the components of the vehicle and impose strict constraints on the technical choices available to the engineers. Considering in particular the performances of the powertrain, the clutch is a key element for the driving comfort during standing start and gear shifting manoeuvres in Manual Transmission and Automated Manual Transmission cars, which constitute the vast majority of the European automotive park. The increase of peak delivered torque by modern turbocharged engines together with the current trend of reduction of the transmission shafts stiffness makes it increasingly difficult to improve or even keep the current level of comfort while designing new models. The objective of this thesis is thus to analyse the clutch comfort and to possibly find innovative ways of improving it. Since the meehanieal conception of the various elements eomposing the drivcline has long since been optimised the main foeus will be on a more holistic system view of the problem.

L'agrément perçu par le conducteur est un paramètre aussi important que les performances ou la consommation pour le succès commercial du véhicule mais malheureusement beaucoup plus difficile à quantifier que ces deux derniers. Lors de la conception et de la mise au point d'une nouvelle voiture des efforts importants sont faits pour garantir un niveau correct des prestations liées au confort. Ces prestations concernent tous les éléments du véhicule et imposent de fortes contraintes sur les choix techniques disponibles. Si on se limite à la chaîne cinématique d'une voiture à boîte de vitesses manuelle ou robotisée, l'embrayage est un élément clef pour le confort lors des fréquentes manoeuvres de décollage et passage de rapport. L'incrément du couple fourni par les moteurs actuels couplé avec l'assouplissement des raideurs de la transmission rendent de plus en plus critique l'amélioration ou le maintien même du niveau d'agrément. L'objectif visé donc par cette thèse est d'analyser les moyens disponibles pour augmenter le confort lors des décollages ou des passages de rapport pour lm véhicule équipé d'une boîte de vitesses manuelle ou robotisée.
