Identification of the elastic properties in CFRP composites

Abstract : The mechanical characterization of composite materials is nowadays a major interest due to their increasing use in the aeronautic industry. The design of most of these materials is based on their stiffness, which is mainly obtained by means of static mechanical measurement. This paper presents a study of two different methods to determine the mechanical properties of carbon fiber composite materials. Elastic properties obtained by ultrasonic characterization are compared to static characterization methods used for tensile tests: strain gauges measurement and digital image correlation. These results are compared to literature and to the material manufacturer data to evaluate the accuracy of the characterization methods.
