Forerunner of Wittgenstein, Fritz Mauthner (1849 - 1923) is a pioneer of the philosophy of language. His “Beiträge zu einer Philosophie der Sprache” (1901-1902) announce the foundations of the “Tractatus logico-philosophicus”. At the literary level, he prefigures the crisis revealed by Hugo von Hofmansthal in the “Letter of Lord Chandos” when the denatured words lose their meaning. Mauthner puts forward the aporia of Zufallssinne, the prevalence of fortuity in the language through which the individual identifies himself. As a result, he agrees with the Ernst Mach’s concept of the ego's inability to be saved ("Das Ich ist unrettbar") and emphasizes the role of language in the problematic of identity.

Ses « Beiträge zu einer Philosophie der Sprache » (1901-1902) annoncent les fondements du « Tractatus logico-philosophicus ». Au plan littéraire, il préfigure la crise que révèle Hugo von Hofmansthal dans la « Lettre de Lord Chandos » lorsque les mots dénaturés perdent leur sens. Mauthner met en avant l’aporie des Zufallssinne, la prévalence du hasard dans le langage par l’entremise duquel l’individu s’identifie. De ce fait, il rejoint le concept d’ « insauvabilité » du moi avancé par Ernst Mach (« Das Ich ist unrettbar ») et souligne le rôle du langage dans la problématique identitaire.
