In vitro Anti-Helicobacter pyloriactivity of plants used for gastro intestinal disorders in traditional medicine from coast, Andes and central forest of Peru

Résumé

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram (-) bacteria responsible of stomach disorders like gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancer. In Peru, stomach cancer is the second one in prevalence and the first one in mortality. Because of the high percentage of recurrence and reinfection, it’s necessary to find news antibacterial molecules, which are able to regulate the bacteria infection. Several natural substances are efficient antibacterial agents and some reputed gastroprotective remedies from worldwide traditional pharmacopeia seem to exhibit inhibitory activity on H. pylori. Therefore, selected Peruvian medicinal plants wereevaluated in vitroagainst H. pylori.Ethnopharmacological surveys were carried out during four month (northern coast, central Andes and high Amazon) in medicinal plants markets and also in the wild, with the help of informants. All plants were selected for their use in case of gastrointestinal disorders, acidity, and ulcers. Altogether 112 species were collected and the anti-H.pyloriin vitrowas evaluated on a Peruvian patient clinical strain, using broth microdilution method. Three parameters were retained as biological activity marker:inhibitory concentration (IC50), Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Bactericide Concentration (MBC).Theresultsshowed that 23 plants extracts were active on H. pylori(MIC ≤ 1000 μg/mL). Among the active plants, 18 presented a bactericidal activity (MBC ≤ 1000 μg/mL). A bioguided fractionation of the active species (bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity) could be considered, using IC50as evaluation criteria.
