Abstract : This work show the development of wireless passif temperature sensor based on the thermal expansion of a liquid in a micro-channel that modifies the electromagnetic properties of a device is presented. Two types of electromagnetic temperature sensors in millimeter-wave frequencies are realized. The first chipless micro-system is made up of a planar-gap capacitor with a micro-channel located in-between its plates. The temperature-dependent expansion/shrinkage of the water inside the micro-channel modifies in a monotonic way the liquid level across the capacitor. The first prototypes of the temperature micro-sensor were micro-machined and integrated with an antenna, while the ambient temperature was remotely measured using FMCW radar interrogation principles. For the second sensor, liquid metal is used to dynamically alter the number of antenna elements activated along a linear array configuration with respect to temperature. In this way, the sensed temperature value can be accurately quantified by the change in radar cross section (RCS) of the device. This study is based on the number of elements activated by the short-circuiting of their gap through the temperature-expansion of liquid metal inside a bridging microfluidic channel.
