Contribution of remote sensing to the calculation of agri-environmental indicators for the CAP, farmers and stakeholders

Abstract : The development of multicriteria evaluation methods is one of the steps to support the current agroecological transition. The implementation of agri-environmental indicators at regional scale faces a major obstacle which is the acquisition of data on management, soil description, vegetation, and even climate, at fine resolution (field, farm) and over large areas (region, country). The use of satellite data is a major solution to remove this obstacle, especially with the deployment since 2014 of a new generation of satellites making it possible to observe earth with high-resolution images; the Sentinels. After a short review of the possibilities provided by these new satellites, the article presents the progress on the development of agri-environmental indicators calculable with help of remote sensing. A focus is given on three indicators in the H2020 NIVA project: carbon budget, nitrate leaching and biodiversity.
