Smart drilling for Aerospace Industry: state of art in research and education

Abstract : In this brief survey, the use of smart manufacturing (SM), specifically in drilling aerospace industry, is discussed and the state of art is presented. Generally, SM is based on real time monitoring for adapting parameters, a challenge for the industry of the forth revolution. During drilling stack composites for aerospace, the monitoring tool force and power can identify the cutting material, within a determined uncertainty envelop of tool wear. The control of machining process can improve tool life, manufacturing productivity and quality. This paper presents a review of drilling strategies used on smart manufacturing used for drilling composites. The actual actions for educating future engineers that will use this research and industrial technology are pointed out and a summary of main challenges is presented.
